For over 5,000 years, candles were made from what nature provided — animal tallow and beeswax. The ancient Romans dipped papyrus in tallow. Medieval chandlers in England made it a respected guild craft. Beeswax candles lit the great cathedrals of Europe, prized for their pure, clean flame.
Then, in the 1850s, the petroleum industry discovered it could sell a cheap byproduct as candle wax. Paraffin was abundant, it was dirt cheap, and the booming oil industry had mountains of it. Within decades, it replaced the natural waxes that had served humanity for millennia.
